Twins born and died to Jervis & Sarah Mead in 1732 . Sarah Mead/? died 1738 in L.D.. Jervis Mead died 1758
The following info. from ERO/Seax unless otherwise stated.
1 or 2 Thomas Meads were churchwardens in the majority of the years 1698-1715
Jervis Mead ~1695 married Sarah? before 1720, not in Little Dunmow, nor Barnston 1696-1723 nor G.D. nor Stebbing , nor Great Easton. No register, thus likely no church in, Bannister Green. ??There are 3 Mead L.D. marriages : of William Mead of Dunmow Magna to Sarah Brandon 1696: Thomas Mead husbandman to ... Stufes? in 1701 : Daniel Mead to Sarah Bush in 1715. . Just 2 baptisms to Jervis & Sarah Mead there 1696-1723: that of a Thomas Mead in 1720 & George Mead 1722 . Little Dunmow Baptisms only start in 1696, and likely Jervis born just before this.
2011 I searched the next fiche D/P 95/1/4 - 1724 onwards - and found:
From L.Dunmow fiche D/P 95/1/1 1696-1723, there is a Thomas Mead, husbandman, who has a William in 1703, a Jervis Mead who has Thomas 1720 & George 1722 and a William Mead who has a Sarah in 1697 & a son in 1703. . William, Thomas & Jervis were maybe brothers. There was also a marriage of a Daniel Mead to Sarah Bush in 1715. So maybe Daniel also a brother. There were burials of the following Meads: Sarah 1717, William 1719, Sarah 1721 & Daniel 1721, no ages given.
George Mead 1722- 1783 , married Mary Chapman 1721- 1785?, on 29/09/1747 in Stebbing. though, both of the Priory - means Dunmow Priory, L.D. . This Mary may have died 1785, age given as 53, but she would have been 63+ : a Mary was buried in G.D. on 30/01/1785 - IGI: this more likely she. . George Mead buried in G.D. on 2/09/1783 - IGI. Little Dunmow registers - D/P 95/1/1 1696-1723 took me further back to their baptisms and thus their parents, in 1722 & 1721 resp. Mary Chapman was baptised 14/5/1721 in Little Dunmow to Thomas & Mary Chapman :no other baptisms found to them between 1696-1723: but Mary could be the eldest and others born after 1723 and have not searched that register. .Could Thomas & Mary have married in Stebbing? - no,not from 1712, try Bardfield .- no page yet created for its records- badly waterstainde but seemingly no Thomas Chapman marriage to a Mary.
Baptism of George to Jervis & Sarah Mead 13/5/1722 L.D.
Baptism of Mary to Thomas & Mary Chapman 14/5/1721 L.D.
Marriage of George Mead & Mary Chapman 29/9/1747 Stebbing - shows witnesses William Mead [ his uncle?[ & Eliza Agor.
The above gives a William & Sarah Mead in " Little Dunmow at the Holydene?? Inhabitants of Dunmow Magna" who had a daughter Sarah in 1697. Maybe William was a brother of Jervis.
The old village of Little Dunmow has a long history centred around the Parish Church which was founded in 1104 by Lady Juga Baynard, sister of Ralph Baynard, a Norman baron. After her death her son Geoffrey Baynard decided to found a priory in honour of St Mary. This Augustine monastery was founded in 1106, and one of its canons served as curate to the parish. TheLady Chapel, now the parish church, became the east end of the choir of the large and stately priory church. It still has the magnificent columns and beautiful Gothic windows as evidence of its former grandeur. The monastic buildings stood to the southwest of the church but, along with much of the Priory, were razed to the ground after the Dissolution, when the priory site, with the manors of Little Dunmow and Clopton Hall, were granted to the patron of the priory,Robert radcliffe, Earl of Sussex.
George Mead & Mary had at least 5 children:
Thomas Mead , bapt. 5/06/1748, Mary, bapt. 1753, Frances, bapt. 24/02/1754[ & on IGI], George, bapt.23/04/1756 & Sarah, b.1758, bapt.1767, aged 9. All these baptisms in Great Dunmow. Found in ERO 2008?
Frances Mead, 1754 - 1828, married William Dennis , 1749 - 1815, on 6/04/1777 & many Genes Reunited people have traced their ancestry back to her.[Bentalls, Grant Edwards, Richard Reeve, Heather Hutchins, Michelle, Audrey, etc. Her brother, Thomas Mead, was witness at this wedding.
Thomas Mead ,1748-1832, married Sarah Pitts on 26/10/1773 in G.D. Parish Church by banns. Neither of them could write.Witnesses were George Pitts - not a brother! & Jesse Gunn [churchwarden].
. . . .Sarah Pitts was baptised in Dunmow Chapel Independent on 31/07/1753- IGI, born 25/6/1753.. Her parents were Lawrence Pitts and Sarah. She had 6 known siblings: Lydia 1754, Thomas 1757, Mary 1759, Judith 1761, Judah 1762 & John 1765, their baptisms all being on IGI. The Independent Chapel was built in 1705, and repaired and enlarged in 1822. Other sources of info. on these ancestors include Brian Dickinson, 19 Harley Walk, Swinnow, Leeds,LS13 4PU & Grant Forsyth Edwards, 20 Hartland Road, Epping ,CM16 4 PE. Sarah Mead/Pitts died 2/4/1837 G.D - image 54
Thomas & Sarah Mead would seem still to be alive in 1821: an 1821 Census Return for G.D. gives a house with Thomas Mead,71-80 and a female, also 71-80. This gives their birth dates as between 1741 & 1750 . A death in 1823 of Sarah Mead, aged 63, could be her with the age is wrong [actually 69/70].. But Poor Rates for 1833 give a Sarah[widow] having a cottage of £2.15s value on which to pay rates. Thomas's sister, Sarah Mead 1758, would have been 65 in 1823, so the death is more likely to be hers if she never married. Thomas Mead is buried 6 Nov 1832, aged 84. D/P 11/1/10 GD Burials 1813-1855
Thomas Mead & Sarah had 3 known children:
Mary Mead ,baptised 8/04/1776, George Mead , baptised 2/04/1780 & Thomas Mead , baptised Jan 1789.
All these baptisms in G.D.[ERO]. No occupation of father was given.
Thomas Mead ,1789, probably married Jane Turner in 1810, G.D
Summary: The earliest recorded of my Meads, Jervis Mead ~1695 and his son George Mead 1722 were baptised at Dunmow Priory/ Little Dunmow, shown below, although George Mead married 1747 in Stebbing. But his children and all my Mead ancestors up to Edith Mead 1891 were born in Great Dunmow. Also my mother, Joan Turner in 1915, totalling 6 generations born there.
Little Dunmow village has a long history centred around the Parish Church which was founded in 1104 by Lady Juga Baynard, sister of Ralph Baynard, a Norman baron who gave his name to Baynard's Castle in London. After her death her son Geoffrey Baynard decided to found a priory in honour of St Mary. This Augustinian priory was founded in 1106, and one of its canons served as curate to the parish. The Lady chapel, now the parish church, became the east end of the choir of the large and stately Little Dunmow Priory church. It still has the magnificent columns and beautiful Gothic windows as evidence of its former grandeur. The monastic buildings stood to the southwest of the church but, along with much of the Priory, were razed to the ground after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, when the priory site, with the manors of Little Dunmow and Clopton Hall, were granted to the patron of the priory, Robert Radcliffe, earl of Sussex. However many fine 14th, 15th 16th- and 17th-century buildings may still be found in the village - notably Priory Place (on the site of the old Priory), Brick House (beside the footpath to Barnston as it approaches the Chelmer valley), Ivy House (at the junction of The Street and Brook Street , Monks Hall (at the junction of The Street and Grange Lane) and Rose Farm(At the Junction of Grange Lane and the Street). A number of thatched cottages are scattered around the village.
I also found a George Mead born 1788 to a William & Mary, with siblings William 1778, Thomas,1780, Sarah 1781, Joseph 1784 & Mary 1791.
Can I be certain that this George Mead 1788 was not my ancestor, the father of Thomas Mead 1821?: pretty much- 1841C has my George born 1777-1781[ with ages rounded down to the nearest 5] and his 1852 death suggests 1877. But IGI - not as reliable as parish records! - has a George Mead born 1780 to William & Mary, GD - probably a typo in the year 1780 ?
Thomas Mead 1748
