Sep 2012: I think Emma Hawkes on Ancestry trees has common ancestors Joseph Perry & Sarah Battle

Also a Patricia Cunningham private tree - have sent messages to both. Trish has replied: her bro-in-law descended from James Battle 1800, sister of Sarah Battle 1786, siblings 1783-1800.

Reasoning

I know that James Perry 1810 was baptised in Stebbing to a Joseph and Sarah Perry, and that there are baptisms 1809 of William and 1812 of Hannah to a Joseph and Sarah. My problem in going back from him, James Perry, was that there are 2 Joseph and Sarah Perry couples , both aged '50', living in Stebbing in 1841C. One couple are in the Village, with none of their own children living with them [ I know that the mallster John Perry,20, living with the former was not born in Stebbing as he goes on to marry Lydia Owers]: the other couple are at Church End and have children Joseph, George, David, Elizabeth, Sarah & Henry. Census record shown below. Thus a grand total of 15 "Jos & Sarah" baptisms 1808-1826!! And 3 more to Joseph & Mary in 1835 .

On my tree above, and in the Stebbing baptisms I have recorded, I have concluded that Jane, Mary Ann, Samuel 1820, Georges 1823 & 1824 & Joseph 1826 are born to the first couple and none of them still at home in 1841.

In 1841C, Hannah Perry, 25-29, and Thomas Perry, 20-24, are living with our James Perry. Thus a family unit of 3 at least. Image 25 of D/P 86/1/4 has Joseph 1819, Thomas 1820, George 1822 & David 1824 all baptised together in 1825 - to Joseph & Sarah Perry - and, thus, presumably brothers : 3 of these 4 are shown below, at Church End, with the 50 [actually 50-54 as ages rounded down ] yr old Joseph & Sarah Perry, [ just Thomas being missing - but living with brother James!], along with younger siblings Elizabeth 14, Sarah 12, Henry 10. These last 3 baptised in Stebbing 25/1/1835 , but to Joseph & MARY? - image 41 of D/P 86/1/4. Was this a mistake by the vicar when recording the baptism???

Further work on James Perry - led nowhere!.

Is the Thomas Perry, 20, living with James Perry 1810 in 1841 his brother? If so, Thomas’s m.c. would show their father. I thought Thomas might have married 1851-2, as he is in the 1861C.,39, in Colchester, widowed, with an 8 yr. old daughter Elizabeth, b. Moulsham Chelmsford and 1 year old Caroline[ Mar 1860] b. Colchester. Also a sister Julia Follett, 39, widowed, b.Suffolk, Bury St.Edmund.[this seems very odd!].: should it read sister-in-law: is she the sister of Thomas'dead wife.? Also cannot find a marriage of a Follett to a Julia. And a Jane Perry dies Dunmow Jun 1860. The marriage in ‘Sep’, 1850 of a Thomas to Mary Philpott seemed likely, ref. 12.131,Dunmow. So, got this.: but, it is of a Thomas Perry, resident in Hatfield Broad Oak, labourer, with a father Charles ,labourer. I do not think this is the same Thomas Perry,20, that is living with our James Perry, 30, in 1841C above. Another possible marriage is Chelmsford 12.111 Dec 1843 to Jane/Amelia,:got this, Dec 2008, but again incorrect- shows a Widford marriage of a Thomas Perrey, bricklayer, father William, to Amelia March.

Likely father of James Perry.

Joseph Perry, aged 50-54 [2 possibilities below] in 1841 Census. Both thus born 1786-1791.. Have found , ERO, the Stebbing baptisms 25/04/1809 William Perry to Joseph & Sarah Perry - a quick birth & baptism!. 01/07/1810 James to Joseph & Sarah Perry - I think this is our James Perry - & 26/04/1812 Hannah Perry to Joseph & Sarah :she, Hannah, is living with James in 1841C. Thus a family unit of 3: probably more born 1814-1820 -see 'Perry-anonymous' tree and more 1820-1830.
D/P 86/1/4. Joseph b.1819, Thomas b.1820, George b.1822 & David b.1824 are all baptised together 17/8/1825 and, thus, presumably brothers. : 3 of these 4 are shown below, at Church End, with the 50 [actually 50-54 as ages rounded down ]yr old Joseph & Sarah Perry, [ just Thomas Perry being missing - but with brother James in this census], along with younger siblings Elizabeth 14, Sarah 12, Henry 10 [ these last 3 also baptised en masse,1835, but attributed to a Joseph & Mary!!??].

1841c-a

Above: Living at Church End , our likely family in 1841C.

1841c

There is a John Perry, 20, mallster, in the house of another Joseph, 50, in the Village,, and this could well be the John Perry, 32, who marries Lydia Owers in 1852. He is not another brother of James.: his father is Samuel, mallster, and I cannot find him in 1841C. There are 3 suitable age Samuels in Essex, but none are Mallsters. The family of this John Perry came from Suffolk.

1851C. Missing for this area of Essex!

1860. A Joseph Perry aged 75 buried in Stebbing , image 9, on 18/5/1860, died in Dunmow Union House. I have this dc. Joseph Perry, 76, agricultural labourer, died 15/5/1860, in the Union Workhouse Great Dunmow. Does not say where he lived. Informant: Mary Ann Baylie, present at the death, Union Workhouse, Great Dunmow. Cause of Death: Natural Decay. Mary Ann Baylie not found in 1861C. This Joseph seems just too old to have been 54 at the most in 1841C, but could well be the same.

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Dunmow/#Records

1861C has a Jos.Perry, aged 75, at Church End. Living next door but one is Joseph Perry 42 and family: is he a son? These could well be Joseph 1788 with son Joseph 1819 on my tree. In which case above 1860 dc is not our man

1870. A Joseph Perry dies in the Village, Stebbing, aged 86, formerly a farm labourer, on 28/12/1870. Cause of death: Senile Decay. Informant Ann Farrow, in attendance, the Village Stebbing [and a Farrow family were living next door to Jos Perry 75 back in 1861C!: Ann Farrow had been Ann Gunn and she married William Farrow in 1845] - this could be he: it is almost certainly the Jos Perry 75 in 1861C.

perry-joseph-1870-dc

. If age, 86, on dc is correct, then this Joseph born ~1784.

Also another death of Joseph Perry ,76, in 1868 Dunmow. But he was not buried in Stebbing

I possess a long list of Stebbing Perry marriages, 1719-1836 from Essex,Suffolk & Norfolk in the UK genealogy website, and also some Perry christenings1801-1836 from IGI & ERO.. Have created a' Perry-anonymous' on my Microsoft Word Trees with all records so far found. I am 99.9% certain I now have the correct parents and likely siblings for James Perry 1810.

EARLIER PERRY in chronological order

The Perry-Earlier tree shows the probable descent from James Perry & Grace Cock , m.1742, to Joseph Perry,1749, & Ann Branch, m.1772, to Joseph Perry, 1788, & Sarah Battle, m.1808 . The christian names of James, William, Joseph & Martha run through these families.[ My only reservation is that I am unable to explain where the other Joseph, b.1786-1790, who appears in 1841 Stebbing census & dies in 1860, & aged 75 would indicate birth~1785, fits in, nor who his parents were . But he is presumably the Joseph Perry who marries Sarah Hutley in 1810. ]

1742. James Perry m. Grace Cock in Shalford 21/6/1742 - info. originally from Jill Joslin,Genes. Interesting that this marriage is by license, & that it is in Shalford, as both stated [ & indeed are] of the parish of Stebbing.: maybe because they already had one child, Grace Perry 15/5/1741, but this entry does not say 'bastard'. Shalford about 5 miles to N.E of Stebbing.

shalford

Grace Cock had been baptised to John Cock & Elizabeth 19/6/1720 in Stebbing, but no 1712-1720 marriage of her parents in Stebbing. Thus they married elsewhere or before 1712 in Stebbing. . A John Cock died Dec 1779

grace-cock

Also a Jane Cock baptised 1717 Stebbing to John Cock & Elizabeth - presumably Elizabeth died soon after 1720.

1741-1761. James & Grace Perry had at least 8 children 1741-1761. Baptised in Stebbing, Grace Perry 1741, Mary Perry 1744, Martha Perry 1746, Joseph Perry & Ann Perry 16/7/1749, Elizabeth Perry 1751, James Perry 1754 & William Perry 1761.

josper

From the above 1749 Stebbing baptism record - D/P 86/1/1, 1712-1812, - it would appear that Joseph was a twin. [look for burial of an Ann 1749-1769?]. Did not find a burial for Grace Perry in the years 1760-1812 - images 15-31, nor one for James Perry.

1772. Joseph Perry, of the parish of Great Dunmow,1749- married Ann Branch , of Stebbing, in Stebbing on 6/2/1772. D/P 86/1/2, image 16.

perry-branch-mc

Joseph & Ann Perry had prob. 7 children 1772 - 1788, baptised in Stebbing, Ann 1772, Sarah 1774, James 1776, Mary 1779, Elizabeth 1782, Martha 1786 & Joseph 14/12/1788.

josper

The year 1788 is truncated on the right of the above baptism.

. .An Ann Perry died 3/6/1810 in Stebbing, annotated PP = parish poor. This likely to be Ann Branch 1746.

. .Ann Branch had been baptised 16/11/1746 in Stebbing to parents John Branch 1718 & Sarah Butcher 1722. Sarah. Butcher/ Branch, 87, dies 1807

anne-branch

John Branch had married Sarah Butcher, 20/10/1743, Stebbing.

branch-butcher

Parents of John Branch , baptised 17/8/1718 were John Branch & Elizabeth? They also had Elizabeth Branch in 1722.

john-branch

Parents of Sarah Butcher, baptised 25/12/1722, Stebbing were Thomas Butcher & Sarah Sutton, who married 28/9/1721 Stebbing.

Cannot go back any further as Stebbing records only start in 1712.

1808. Joseph Perry 1788 married Sarah Battle on 14/11/1808 in Stebbing. D/P 86/1/3, image5. Joseph Perry to Sarah Battle, of this parish, by banns, 2 marks. Witnesses Sarah Thurgood & William Battle .[ In 1821 a Sarah Thurgood marries a Joseph Perry, batchelor].

Sarah Battle was baptised 28/5/1786 to a James [prob. died 1840 aged 81, thus b~1759] ] & Martha Battle in Stebbing .D/P 86/1/1

Could put Seax images for above events sometime - decided 2014 that this was not necesary!!

Joseph & Sarah Perry had , maybe, 10 children, 1809 - 1830, though difficult to be certain as another Joseph Perry married a Sarah Hutley in 1810 in Stebbing, and little to distinguish the 2 sets of children in the parish register! In 1841 C the last 3 children listed with them, Elizabeth, Sarah & Henry, were interestingly baptised to a Joseph & Mary!! - & no Joseph to Mary marriage in Stebbing 1820 -1840 . I feel this must be an error in recording!

1848. Sarah Perry/Battle dies 27/4/1848, aged 60, Stebbing. Wife of Joseph Perry, laborer. Cause of death: Cancer of the stomach. Informant: Mary Emery, in attendance, Stebbing. She is buried 3/5/1848, age 60, Stebbing. Her actual age would be almost 62 - as she was baptised May 1786.

I cannot be certain of this: could be the d.c.of  Sarah Hutley! I have not found  d.cs for  both these Sarah Perrys . 2’ Dunmow’ deaths do exist 1854-1861 – but neither of these likely to be the other Sarah as no Stebbing burial. .

perry-sarh-1848dc

1870. I think Joseph Perry 1788 died 28/12/1870 in The Village Stebbing, formerly a farm laborer, of Senile Decay.- have d.c. - stated age 86. Informant was Ann Farrow, in attendance, The Village Stebbing- she seemingly not related: aged 47, born Wethersfield according to 1871C. Buried 4/1/1871 - Stebbing burials Seax.

01/07/1810 James to Joseph & Sarah . Almost sure this is our James
26/04/1812 Hannah to Joseph & Sarah she is living with James in 1841C. Thus a family unit of 3: possibly more born 1814-1820
a Thomas b. 1820, but not baptised until 1825, alongside brothers Joseph, George & David, would be the Thomas on 1841C with our James & Sarah Perry family
12/01/1813/7? James to James & Phoebe Perry?
22/05/1814 John to Joseph & Sarah Perry. .
29/05/1814 William .. .. need to check these 2 births of William & John , maybe twins?

14/06/1818 Jane to Joseph & Sarah Perry
31/05/1818 Mary Ann to Joseph & Sarah Perry These last 2 surely must be one for each couple as baptisms so close together
24/12/1820 Samuel to Jos. & Sarah Perry
On Essex Site : Joseph b.28/9/1819, Thomas b.31/10/1820, George b.17/8/1822 & David b.5/3/1824 are all baptised together on 7/8/1825 .As Thomas is living with James,1810, in 1841C, I assume they were brothers, and thus the siblings above, plus the ones born 1826-1830 are thus also siblings of James. But need to remember that there were 2 Joseph & Sarah couples prob. producing children 1809-1830, & maybe a third couple from 1820 onwards. Could the 3rd Joseph Perry marriage in 1820 to Sarah Thurgood been that of a widower Joseph?

1835. Elizabeth b~1826, Sarah b~1828 & Henry b~1830 all these 3 baptised together 25/1/1835, to Joseph & Mary Perry, but living with Joseph & Sarah in 1841C!
More baptisms exist that I did not record 1820-1836
Possible children of Joseph Perry who married Sarah Hutley in 1810:

John/William1814 Martha 1815 James 1816 Jane/Mary Ann 1818 Samuel 1820

Thus at least 2 couples called James & Sarah Perry having children in Stebbing 1842-1850. Susannah,1842, & Martha, 1845 are 'our' family . Maria, James, Sarah, Susannah & William could all have had the same parents: this is proved in 1861C, Duck End, Stebbing and are not 'ours': is there a marriage for their parents? Yes, James Perry & Sarah Harrington marry in 1841
