Dennis Lehane/Lane 1829/1832 - 1906

1829. Dennis Lehane was thought to have been born, probably on County Cork, 3/3/1829, to father Stephen and mother Joanna/Johanna.. This birth date, plus the name of Stephen as his father, are taken from his 1906 d.c. . The name of his mother Johana is seen 1. in the older female of this name who arrives in N.Y. with him in 1852 :2. in the 1870C & in the 1880C Joanna/Johannah is the wife of Stephen. Also Dennis calls a daughter Johanna /Hannah in ~1872

A Boston genealogist suggested the parents might have been Stephen Lehane and Joanna Healy, married in Kilnamaryra, Co. Cork in 1827 . Not sure how the family knew he came from Cork!-likely from 1889 newspaper article on John S Lane I have confirmed that such a marriage exists on RootsIreland; also that there was a son Dennis baptised there to them in 1832.

Paul Lane, who has an all 37 marker Dna match with my South African cousin, John Lyons, is the great grandson of Dennis, descendant of his son John C Lane, born 1869/70.. This Dna match must imply that Paul and I have a common ancestor in the not too distant past, likely 1770s at the earliest

June 2015. Also an all 37 marker Dna match with Jim Lyons from Derreenaling Ballyvourney, the neighbouring parish- record wise- to Kilnamartyra

Paul Lane <pklane36@gmail.com>

Paul states that Dennis had siblings Daniel, Cornelius, John, & Kate.

1850. 20/9/1850 A Stephen Leehane, from Ireland, no age given, arrives on the ship New England in New York from Liverpool

1852. 11/8/1852 Dennis Lehan , 20, from Ireland, arrives on the ship New World in New York from Liverpool with Cornelius 13, John 11, and Johana, 40 'wife'. The latter is presumably his mother, aged 42-48, from later census entries, and the other 2 younger brothers. I can not find baptisms of these 2 in Kilnamartyra to Stephen & Johanna Lehan/Lehane/Lyhan/Lyhane etc . Ancestry Shipping Records. There were 708 total passengers. 3 died during the trip and 3 were born during the trip. From later census records Cornelius might have been only ~8. a brother Daniel would have been ~12 [ a birthdate of May 1838 for him in 1900C] and a sister Catharine only about 6 . From 1900C it seems Daniel 1838 did not arrive in the US until 1864 - did Catharine/Kate travel with him?? 17/8/2014 - searched Ancestry for ~1864 arrivals without luck

1859/1860. Was naturalised as Dennis Lane, having arrived in New York in 1852, resided in the States 5 years at least, one of which in Pennsylvania

1860. Dennis Lane marries Mary Conley, born in N.Y., 15 Jan 1860 St Marys church in Turtle Point PA - does this cert exist? If so any ages on it?

Dennis & Mary seemingly had the following children: Sarah 1863, Catherine 1868, Margaret 1868- are they twins??- John 1870, Hannah 1873, Mary 1875, Stephen 1879, Alice 1883 & Daniel 1885. But see lower down- 10 in all

1860C. 16/7/1860 Dennis Lane , 26, labourer, estate $50, & Mary, 30, are living at Smethport, county McKean , Port Allegany post office - image available online Ancestry

On 1/8/1860, Stephen Lane, 62, farmer, estate $340, Joanna, 56 & Cornelius 18!, no occupation given, are living at Lafayette, county McKean Port Allegany post office, - this image also available online

1870 C. . Donnie Lane, wife & 4 children are listed online in 1870 Annin Census. His real estate was valued at 600 and personal estate at 400. Mistranscription/Typo for ages, 28 should read 38-40!. We think Donnie is Dennis .

Paul tells me that Dennis had 10 children, Stephen, Sarah,Catherine, Maggie, John Cornelius ( his grandfather) Johanna, Mary Ann, Stephen P, Alice Ellen, and Daniel Francis . Censuses show no sign of the first born, Stephen, - he must have died 1861-1870. Also Johanna appears on the 1880C as Hannah.

A Descendant of Daniel Francis Lane 1885-1971- Clifford Gerrard Lane 1930-1992, has Waitalane1 Ancestry Tree but no information on Stephen & Johanna.

From above tree, Dennis' children were: Stephen 1861-1863, Sarah Jane 1863, Catherine 1865-1875, Margaret E. 1867, John Cornelius 1870, Johanna 1872-1946, Mary A. 1874, Alice Ellen 1882, Daniel Francis 1885-1971

1880 -1892 Stephen, 1800, died. Paul has obtained the 1892 dc for Mrs J.Lane, widow . What became of Cornelius & Katharine. Daniel, 62, is in the 1900C.

1890C Only fragments survive. Nothing for Pennsylvania and very little around New York

1900C. Dennis Lane, 71, born Mar 1829, arrived in the States in 1850, has been wrongly transcribed as Daniel - look at original written entry to see the confusion

Daniel Lane 71 farmer & info. on what he owned?
Mary Lane 58 married 40 years, 10 children , 3 dead. her parents coming from Ireland
Stephen Lane 22
Alice lane 18
Daniel 15

Dennis & Mary . . .Paul- any idea of year this taken?

This seemingly a later photo of them. ~ Year taken & identities of his children in it ??

A photo of Daniel 1885 would be great too, please

1906 Dennis Lane dies - his death certificate states:

Age 74

birth place Ireland
Name of Father  Stephen Lane
birth place of father - not known
maiden name of mother - not known
birth place of mother - blank
occupation farmer
Date of death  Feb 6 1906
informant C B Schultz ( daughter Johanna) married

His date of birth given is 3 years before the baptism found in Kilnamartyra.

Missing Links!
No baptism in North Cork - includes Kilnamartyra - of a Daniel to a Stephen Lehane, Lyhane etc 1836-1840!!. Nor for a Cornelius ~1839. Nor for a Catharine, plus variations, 1844-1848. Nor for a John 1842-1846 - but he could have been born by 1839 . Baptism of Dennis himself was not until 1832

Best Solution to reinforcing the hypothesis that Dennis had parents Stephen Lyhan & Johanna Healy in Kilnamartyra seemed to be:

Obtain the 1889 d.c of his brother John Stephen, died 3/11/1889 in Allegeny Sep 2014 Paul now has this

Obtain the 1880 -1900 d.c. of Johanna Lane, last known, aged 70, in 1880C, living at Allegany, Cattaraugus, New York Sep 2014 Paul now has the 1892 dc for a Mrs J.Lane

BUT . . Neither of these certificates help us!

*My understanding of the Ydna test that I had done was that  I matched John Lyons for all 37 markers with a genetic difference of  0.  This was my only march at 37 markers. My Haplogroup is R-DF21  according to the Tip info, John and I  have an 89 % chance of having a common relative within 5 generations 74% in 3 generations.  I believe I have found my ancestors in Ireland but I need a little more information to be sure I have the correct people in Ireland. The name in Ireland I am tracking is Lehane it appears to have been changed when my ggandfather was naturalized 1859.  I have found part of the family coming to the US in 1852.  If I have the correct people in Ireland my ggrandfather came from Kilnamartyra  Co Cork. I have  what I believe is the Marriage of my gggfather to a Healy but I would like to find the birth of 3 or more of the children to this couple to make sure they are indeed the correct people. I am like many people struggling with the Irish information. I would be interested in communicating with you on Irish records / research. I have not posted any of the information I have on line but I do use family tree maker soft software, so if we do find a common ancestor I can share the info.

Angelakyger has an Ancestry Family tree with Dennis Lane & wife Mary Conolly plus children on it- but cannot work out how she might be related!. Does not go further back! Has spouses for John 1870, Mary E 1870 & Mary A 1874. Also Private?? spouses for Daniel, Johanna [Schultz] & Alice

Contacted Waitalane1 owner Ancestry Family tree on 13/1/2015: Clifford Gerard Lane ,son of Daniel Francis Lane, son of Dennis 1829

Facts from Kilnamartyra parish records, gleaned from RootsIreland

Stephen Lyhane m. Johanna Healy 1823

A Dennis Lyhane baptised to the couple 1832. Have failed to find a John, Cornelius,Dan, Kate baptised to them - might just be due to different spellings, but I doubt it. Looked through Fiche 5003 of Kilnamartyra parish records using a MHC subscription in Dec2014, & Dec 2015 NLI records online, also Paul in fact had obtained an old copy from LDS and found none of these baptisms.

There are marriages of a Timothy Lehan in 1815 & 1822 , And a Timothy Lyhan, father John, was baptised there in 1803. Another Timothy baptised 1807, father not a Stephen, Patrick, John, Tim . or Corn.!!

Also a Timothy Lehane baptised Ballyvourney to a John. And a Stephen & a Patrick Lehane, baptised 1827 & 1827 respectively, to a Patrick , Ballvourney

Griffiths has a Timothy Lehane in Ballyvourney, a nearby parish.
