sam-child

Arthur Parchment 1851 - 1910. 4th child of Samuel & Charlotte Parchment. Born Sep 1851 Braintree . His father was a silkweaver.

1855-6. His family move from Braintree to Bethnal Green.

1861C. Arthur Parchment, aged 9, living at 28 South Conduit Street, B.G. with his parents and 5 siblings

1861c

1871C Arthur Parchment was in the Navy, crew on the vessel, Racoon, Dockyard, Halifax .

1881. Arthur Parchment married Julia Theobald, sister of Laura who had married Arthur's younger brother Henry in 1876, 10/07/1881, in St.Judes, B.G., both fathers Samuel Parchment & Joseph Theobald were silk manufacturers. He was living 55 Viaduct Street, Carman, she 74 Viaduct Street. She was born Sudbury. No direct family witnesses, but Grace Goodwin a likely relative of his brother-in-law, Henry Goodwin..

. . . . . . . Arthur & Julia Parchment had Jessie Emily Parchment born 2/2/1883 baptised 28/2/1883 St Andrew, B.G. to Arthur & Julia, of 74 Viaduct Street, he a silk weaver. She seems to be missing from 1891C, but in 1901C, is living with her Uncle, Henry Goodwin, who had married Caroline Parchment in 1866. A Lillie & Daisy Parchment Dec1905 were born 2 /10/1905 in B.G. Workhouse to single mother Jessie Parchment, baptised 8/10/1905 in St.Johns .B.G., no sponsors - how sad! Lillie Parchment died 1905 and Daisy Parchment died Mar 1906. Jessie Parchment, spinster, still alive 1934 - cannot find her in 1911C, nor can I find a death.

1891C. Arthur Parchment, aged 39, silk weaver, living at 63 Viaduct Street , in 2 rooms, with just his wife. So, where is their daughter Jessie? - probably just omitted by mistake.

1899 Dec. His wife Julia Parchment , aged 39, dies B.G.1c.155 , mistranscribed in BMD as Julia Parchmant

1901C. Arthur Parchment, aged 49, widower, silk manufacturer?, with his mother Charlotte, 75, and sister, Carolone[Goodwin], 52

1908. His mother Charlotte Parchment dies whilst he was reading to her.

An inquest was held because her death was so sudden: she was sitting in a chair while her eldest son, this was Arthur in 1908 , read to her, when she suddenly became distressed and died within a minute. She left a considerable sum of money [1932 probate record], this probably from what Samuel was left by his uncle James Parchment, the turnkey who died in 1873. This money remained dormant until 1932 when Arthur's brother Alfred Parchment - grandfather of GL- learnt of its existence and claimed it. Charlotte left effects of £750, but her 6th son, Alfred Samuel Parchment did not seem to realise this and only got Administration on 24/11/1932. Apparently, her effects were retained by Hillary's[ thought by G.L still to be in existence today] , pending the discovery of a suitable heir. In 1932, an item appeared in a newspaper seeking claimants and, Alfred Parchment, recognising his mother's details, claimed and received the money. It seems odd to me that Arthur Parchment, seemingy present at her death, was not recognised as a suitable heir between 26/5/1908 and his own death on 24/1/1910.

1910 Arthur Parchment dies Mar W.Ham 4a151 , aged 58, at 92 Hitcham Road, North Leyton on 24/1/1910

Here again money was left that was not claimed by his daughter Jessie Parchment until 1934!

1934. Probate was granted for Arthur Parchment to Jessie Parchment, spinster, on 18/4/1934 Effects £95. 9s.3d.

Lillie Parchment died 1905 and Daisy Parchment died Mar 1906.

1911C. Jessie Parchment, 24. servant, in the Bethnal Green Workhouse, Waterloo Road, B.G. Had she been in there all the time from 1905 onwards?

Jessie Parchment, spinster, still alive 1934 nor can I find a death. Could she have emigrated? - already 50 when she received her father's money in 1934.

A Jessie E Parsons marries Hawker in B.G. in 1935- could this be she??- I think not: wrong age when she died in 1961. There is also a 1925 marriage in Bermondsey for a Jessie Parchment to Johnson, but do not think this could be her as still a spinster in 1934!
