b.. . . . . . . . . . . . .Ann Wilkinson 1809 married John Skinner : they married 3 May 1831 Lindsell in the presence of John Smith and Mary Perry. Banns read 27 Mar, 3 and 10 Apr 1831. John Skinner was convicted 8 Oct 1842 for stealing a quantity of leather from a shop owned by Edward Swinbourn Philbrick and was sentenced to 7 years transportation. John and Ann had 4 children all born in Lindsell, George 1832, Susan 1834 Alfred 1836 and Walter Skinner Barker Dunmow Dec 1841? . Walter’s bap records states: John Skinner possible father of Walter, as an absentee. Walter could possibly[ almost certainly!] be the son of William Barker. Ann married William Barker 1851 (don’t have the marriage - Susan) and had two children Richard Skinner Barker 1845 and Julia Skinner Barker 1848. Seemingly no Bmd entries for them . Richard’s bap record states that his mother Anne is the wife of John Skinner and that her husband being and having been for some years past a transported convict. Julia’s bap record shows her mother as Anne and that Anne was the wife of John Skinner living at Grt Easton the wife (Anne) being at Lindsell and co-habitating with William Barker. All this information was written by the vicar on the bap records of the children, and Susan did see and has somewhere papers about the conviction of John Skinner. Also info from a Denise Palett/ Matilda: 'John was convicted for stealing leather and then he was sent to Australia for seven years'. I have found that he wasn’t sent away immediately, he was convicted again in February 1844. The Chelmsford Chronicle of 1844 mentions that he was convicted of stealing some timber and was transported because of a n earlier conviction, so if he was the father of Walter - who knows what was going on! maybe he was in jail at that point.
